The program also includes the study of art in history and its relevance and importance to many cultures.

Box Hill North PS also runs an Instrumental Program in guitar, violin, drums and keyboard/piano. Lessons run on a rotational program, during school hours. Each lesson runs for half and hour and is taught by a highly experience teacher.

Students are encouraged to attend lunchtime 'clubs' theat include a junior choir, senior choir and dance clubs, that all run for half and hour per week.
All classes perform once a term at our weekly assembly.
Reading Recovery
Teacher: June Sealey
The Reading Recovery Program complements our Early Years Literacy Program. It provides an additional opportunity for Year 1 students who are experiencing difficulties learning to read and write.
Children work individually with the Reading Recovery teacher for 30 minutes each day, in addition to their regular classroom instruction in Reading and Writing. Their learning needs are identified and an individual reading and writing program is desgned and implemented to meet each student’s particular needs.
Students participate in the program for up to 20 weeks and receive on going support in their classrooms through to Year 4.
Our Reading Recovery Program has been highly successful in accelerating children’s learning. It has enabled them to become independent readers and writers who are better able to participate in the daily literacy activities of their classroom.
Physical Education
Teacher: Tracey McLaren
All students at Box Hill North Primary have 1 hour of physical education with Tracey each week. They also participate in one hour class sport sessions each week. The program encompasses age appropriate movement, skills, games and sports, using a variety of equipment, that is in accordance with Victorian Essential Learning Standards. The program includes bike education, swimming and cross country running as well as opportunities to be involved in various workshops taken by visiting specialists. Senior school students are involved in inter-school sports on a weekly basis during summer and winter.

L.O.T.E. - Japanese
Teacher: Helen Hiruma
The school offers a progressive and exciting Japanese program which introduces the students to the language and culture of Australia's influential northern neighbour. The curriculum areas of Japanese, Music and Art combine to invite visiting musicians and artists to conduct workshops which enable the students to experience various aspects of Japan's rich and vibrant culture. Japanese classes provide a lively and stimulating environment of songs, games and hands-on activities such as origami and calligraphy. The children are encouraged to enter the annual Japanese Calligraphy competition. The important areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing Japanese are all covered. The children learn the basic 46-character Hiragana alphabet and simple Kanji characters. They also have the opportunity to play with traditional Japanese toys and to make craft items associated with the major festivals celebrated annually in Japan. The most popular include The Dolls' Festival, Cherry Blossom Festival, Children's Day and Shichi-go-san. An annual Japanese Day is a highlight of the school calendar.
